Fortunately, its genes remained extant
in the Mangalitza, itself still a rare
breed. Tony York of PigParadise imported
some of the best examples of their type
to the UK in November 2006. It is not
possible to say just how much
Lincolnshire Curly Coat is present in
our herd but they are the nearest it is
possible to get to the original.
Combining genes from two very hardy,
disease resistant, well natured ‘breeds’
should stand them in good stead for the
future.
The Lincolnshire Curly Coat was fair
haired. Mangalitzas come in three
different colour varieties, all having
black skin: – Blonde, Red and
Swallow-bellied (black back with grey
undercarriage). The Red predominately
originate from Hungary, the
Swallow-belly from
Austria and the
Blonde mainly from Austria but also from
Hungary.
The Rectory Reserve herd is a
mix of all these varieties. The
foundation pair are
Mangal - a swallowbellied
boar
And
Ginger
- a Red/Blonde cross sow
Descended from these is Precious
(Blonde), from their first litter, and
Delila (Red) from the second. Augmenting
the herd is Lily, a pure Blonde female
brought in from a litter bred in
Staffordshire.

Our
pigs have become the main
story at
Rectory Reserve but they are
not the whole of it.
They are joined by three
horses – Ritz, Max (retired
carriage horses) and Rocco
(a teenage do-anything,
go-anywhere horse); three
Springer Spaniels – Lancer (retired) ,
Pilot (self-employed i.e. mostly does
what he wants) and Gunner (a young
working Gundog in the making); a cat, a
fluctuating flock of call ducks and
assorted breeds and cross breeds of
chicken. The combination means there is
never a dull moment for humans!!
